I’m Industrious!

February 15th, 2006

Two projects have consumed me this past week, and only one of them involved armor-clad space nuns.

For the past couple of evenings, I’ve been building bookshelves. After years of looking for a set of horizontal surfaces worthy of supporting our personal library, we finally ordered this puzzle bookcase from Crate and Barrel. It’s four separate units that fit together in an interesting fashion.

The shelves themselves weren’t so hard to assemble, especially for someone like me who has put together many of those cheap bookcases from Meijer for my toyroom. No, the hard part was fitting the many, many tiny plastic covers over the exposed screw holes. Much sweating and cursing later, we have shelves!

The second project (the one which does involve space nuns) is my ongoing, manic attempt to paint up as many Warhammer 40,000 miniatures as I can manage prior to February 24th, when I head to Madison, WI to visit my friends for another in our occasional series of gaming weekends. It’s crunch time now, and while Vic has been glued to the Winter Olympics, I’ve been sequestered in the basement with a variety of toxic chemicals. Last night, I woke up at 2:00 am and after an hour of tossing and turning, gave up and spent the next three hours back in the basement. If figured that as long as I was awake, I might as well accomplish something.

Here are my new specimens of terrible Tyranids. First up is the stealthy Lictor. My original thought was to do him in an entirely monochromatic color scheme, with greyscale camouflage markings. I later abandoned the camo notion, but stuck to black-and-white aside from his beady red eyes and purply tendrils.

Second is the mighty Carnifex, the Tyranids’ equivalent of an armored tank. It turned out really, really well in my opinion, and didn’t take nearly as long to complete as the Immolator tank I’d worked on the previous week. The first photo below is clickable for a larger view.

The last thing an unlucky Space Marine will see.

Finally, here’s a Tyranid Family photo. From left to right: Lictor, Carnifex, Biovore (my own scratch-built rendition), Zoanthrope, Hormagaunt, Termagant, Tyranid Warrior, Broodlord and Genestealer.

I’m not by any means finished. I’ve still got several squads to whip into shape, with only a week left. Gotta get crackin’!
