The Dangers Of Owning A Hybrid Car

November 1st, 2006

This morning, “on my way” to work, I stopped at the local Target store. Upon exiting, I opened the door to my Prius, got in and pushed the “start” button. Nothing happened. I tried again, with no success. There I sat, puzzled. After all, the car had passed its 15,000 mile checkup just last week.

It was then that I noticed the shoes on the floor of the passenger’s side. What the hell, I thought: someone’s been in my car!!!

It took me a good bit longer than it should have for the reality to sink in. THIS WAS NOT MY PRIUS. After I’d gone into the store, someone had parked an identical model/color car in the same approximate location and direction as my own, and left it unlocked to boot.

Sheepishly exiting–and grateful that the owner appeared nowhere around–I quickly located my own car just a few spaces away, hidden behind a frickin’ minivan.

Prior to this, I’d been pleased to see more and more Priuses (Priii?) roaming the streets of Champaign-Urbana. Now I’m not so sure about that.
