An Imaginary Interview With Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, Producers of “Lost”

November 3rd, 2006

Dateline: the not-too-distant future

Interviewer: So, Evangeline Lilly has become the eleventh major cast member to exit Lost, and the fifth actor whose character was killed shortly after a run-in with Hawaiian police.

Carlton Cuse: Total coincidence.

Damon Lindelof: Don’t mistake coincidence for fate.

Cuse: So right, dude.

Lindelof: The honest answer is, when Evangeline came on the show, she didn’t want to make a long-term commitment to a series.

Cuse: I remember her saying exactly that.

Lindelof: In fact, she specifically said, “I don’t want to be in more than two seasons and twelve–

Cuse: Thirteen.

Lindelof: –thirteen episodes of year three.

Interviewer: But there were still so many unanswered questions about her character. Would she ultimately choose Jack or Sawyer? When did she get a wooden leg? And what was up with that aardvark?

Lindelof: Yeah, love the aardvark. You’ll learn more about that in season five.

Cuse: Dude.

Lindelof: Look, we love Evangeline and so we agreed that she would come on the show and then we would find a time in which her arc would come to an end. We just felt this was the right time.

Interviewer: It’s no secret that Lilly wasn’t the most beloved cast member. Did that play any role in her departure?

Cuse: No.

Lindelof: Absolutely not.

Cuse: Well, there was the time she shivved Jorge.

Lindelof: We’ve been advised not to talk about it.

Cuse: We don’t really talk about anything other than the creative decisions made on the show. We would never let that kind of thing determine the direction of the story. We’re all about the story.

Interviewer: Hmm. Okay, what’s the latest word on Matthew Fox’s alleged shoplifting incident?

Lindelof: I’m told that the charges may be dropped.

Cuse: Dude just took out a thirty-year mortgage.

Lindelof: Really?

Cuse: Yeah, I just got the change-of-address card.

Lindelof: Oh, man. He is so screwed.

Cuse: Dude.
