Quote “Eek-ek-ek-ek-ek-ek-ek!”

As a child, I considered Ghidorah to be the ultimate monster. He was so tough that it took the combined efforts of Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra to fight him to a draw. And while he was slaughtered in the big finale of Destroy All Monsters, it took seven–seven–of Earth’s defenders to bring him down.

Once I began to understand what went into creating the special effects for Toho’s creature flicks, King Ghidorah became all the more impressive. In addition to the man inside the suit, there were puppeteers in the studio rafters animating two wings, two tails and three heads. It took a village to raise a nigh-invincible space dragon.

Another thing that I like about Ghidorah is that he’s fun to draw. His lack of humanoid features means that even I can produce a pretty good likeness. And, as I am an unrepentant doodler, I have probably sketched Ghidorah hundreds of times over the course of my career.
