Away Game

December 6th, 2012

I never intended to take a month off from blogging. Quite the opposite; my hits went way up over the month of October thanks to my monstrous countdowns, and I’d hoped to take advantage of the extra traffic.

To some extent, life–and especially work–intruded. But who am I kidding? A month ago my wife bought me a second-hand Playstation 3. Since then I’ve been catching up on seven years’ worth of high-definition gaming. So far I’ve played all of the way through Batman: Arkham Asylum, Portal 2 and Uncharted. And there’s a giant, wobbly stack of borrowed discs where those came from. See you in July.

Having a PS3 also put me in the Blu-Ray market. I intend to resist repurchasing my existing DVD collection, but Blu-Ray (or, better yet, the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack) has become my new default video format. It’s soooo pretty.

While the PS3 has been folding me into its sweet embrace by night, there actually has been a lot happening to me on the work front. Last week I was evicted from the office I’ve inhabited the past 14 years. Okay, strictly speaking, I wasn’t evicted so much as asked to relocate upstairs. But it did initially feel like that. I was one of the first people to move into Campbell Hall back in 1998, and I’m fairly certain that I was the only one to occupy the same office all of those years.

With my move has come a new set of responsibilities. For the past 15 years I’ve been WILL-TV’s program director, but my role is being expanded to encompass WILL-AM and -FM as well. As “content director” I’ll be working closely with the FM classical music staff. Which begs the question, what in the heck do I know about classical music? Not much, but I didn’t know anything about gardening either, and I did okay these past couple of years as the producer of Mid-American Gardener. (Sadly, I’ll be giving that up so as not to spread myself too thinly.)

I’ve got a helluva lot to learn. I know only a little more about radio than I do about Bach. But I’m looking forward to the challenge, if only because it means that I’m ever that much closer to my long-held* dream of putting What Do You Get a Wookiee for Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)?¬†on the air.

*Okay, it’s not a long-held dream. I came up with it about 3:00 this afternoon. Just after I realized that I’d been given everything I needed to blast 105 kilowatts of Gangnam Style across Central Illinois.**

**If you are a WILL-FM listener who happens to be reading this, please understand that I am kidding. Mostly.
