Final Thoughts

November 3rd, 2008

Tomorrow is Election Day, which means that our long, national nightmare will be coming to a close. By which I mean the Presidential campaign.

Tina Fey’s long, Alaskan nightmare will also be ending, one way or the other, as she has no desire to continue playing Sarah Palin. She did get in a few, final digs last Saturday in a surreal, boundary-shattering sketch opposite the real John McCain.

It’s funny stuff–if perhaps a bit defeatist for the weekend prior to the election–and a good opportunity for McCain to show off his appealing sense of humor. It reminds me of the McCain I used to like and respect.

Tomorrow I will get up bright and early, and cast my vote for Obama. Not that I need to, given that I live in Illinois. But it will be a pleasure to do so.

Some would have it that a vote for Obama is a vote inspired by white guilt. I see it, however, as the first real opportunity for choice in my lifetime. Whatever may happen tomorrow, for once it won’t come down to “which old, white guy do you want?”

Mind you, I’m not deluded enough to believe that Obama is the messianic figure that some Republicans have derided. He’s not my ideal candidate. But he’s a damn sight better than what we’ve had in recent memory. For the first time since…well, ever…I’ll be voting for someone rather than against someone else.

It almost makes the last two years of campaigning seem worthwhile.

Debatable

October 5th, 2008

Another Saturday, another Saturday Night Live open featuring Tina Fey as Sarah Palin. And, as was the case with their version of the Katie Couric interview, this one at times plays like a transcript of the actual debate. It’s really long; about 11 minutes.

I should mention that I found this episode of SNL much more consistent in bringing the funny that the season opener. It certainly didn’t hurt to have Anne Hathaway as the host rather than a non-actor such as Michael Phelps.

Here’s another bit that I liked, with Hathaway doing an imitation of her former Princess Diaries co-star Julie Andrews that’s “practically perfect in every way.” I think that it may say something about me that I really, really like her in the Mary Poppins dress…

Come On, You Knew I Was Gonna Post This

September 14th, 2008

Tina Fey as Sarah Palin and Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton discuss sexism in the Presidential race on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. Fey nailed Palin’s Fargo accent, and Poehler turned in an appropriately pissed-off Clinton.

The rest of the show was terrible, by the way. Really, you’re off the whole summer and the best you’ve got are some lame knocks at home-schoolers and people with ugly children?

The Colonel Returns

January 22nd, 2008

Here’s one of the Hulu clips I previously posted: a Saturday Night Live sketch written by the inestimable Tina Fey regarding a Southern colonel who’s very popular with the ladies…
